RAS AL KHAIMAH REBOUND: NATURE EMIRATE RETURNS TO PRE-PANDEMIC VISITOR NUMBERS IN FIRST HALF 2022

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) announces its highest visitor numbers since the onset of Covid-19, with the Emirate reporting visitor arrival numbers in line with pre-pandemic footfall across the first six months of 2022.

The impressive H1 performance saw the Emirate welcome over 521,085 international and domestic visitors between January and June 2022, a total increase of +21% vs H1 2021 and a return to pre-pandemic figures from YTD June 2019.

Enhanced tourism and hospitality offering

The Emirate’s strong performance in 2022 was bolstered by the opening of several new hotels and resorts, including Radisson Resort Ras Al Khaimah on Marjan Island, the InterContinental Mina Al Arab, the first InterContinental Hotels Group property in the Emirate, and most recently, the debut of Mövenpick at Al Marjan Island, located on a 300-metre stretch of golden shoreline and home to the largest floating water park in Ras Al Khaimah. The Emirate now boasts over 8,000 keys, with 4,617 new keys in the pipeline over the next few years.

Celebrated for its outstanding nature, adventurous leisure, and authentic offerings, Ras Al Khaimah has quickly become one of the most sought-after sustainable destinations in the Middle East, most recently being included in Time magazine's World's Greatest Places of 2022. The annual list, which features 50 must-visit global destinations, highlighted Ras Al Khaimah for its adventure offerings and stunning, unique topography and geodiversity. In recognition of the Emirate’s incredible natural surroundings, the Authority has continued its development of sustainable new attractions to draw visitors both locally and internationally. A key new attraction to open was the Jais Sledder, the region’s longest toboggan ride, spanning over 1,840 exhilarating metres of hairpin curves and reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour. Jais Sledder has welcomed over 54,000 visitors since opening in February.

Commenting on the fast rebound of tourism in the Emirate, Raki Phillips, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, said: Ras A Khaimah is one of the first destinations in the region to recover to pre-Covid levels thanks to the agility of our tourism community during the pandemic. This is all the more remarkable given the current economic and geo-political landscape in which we operate that drives our focus on what's important for long term resilience - diversification, community and sustainability. Our investment strategy, which focuses on exactly that, has been central to our fast rebound. We are on track to reach more than 1.11 million arrivals by the end of the year and to fully return to pre-pandemic levels in just two years.”

Balanced Tourism

Underpinning Ras Al Khaimah’s return to above pre-pandemic visitor numbers is the Authority’s commitment to building a sustainable destination. Announced at the 2022 Arabian Travel Market, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority has adopted a bold new approach to sustainability – Balanced Tourism – marking a key milestone in its strategy to drive overall growth and become the regional leader in sustainable tourism by 2025.

The Authority is committed to shaping tourism in the UAE by placing all aspects of sustainability at the centre of its investment and development strategy to create a destination that will resonate with today’s responsible traveller.

As such, it unveiled a Tourism Business Accreditation Program that will also provide a management framework to help individual businesses grow their sustainability efforts as a means of benchmarking their performance. It is anticipated that over 30 businesses will receive tourism certifications in the first year of the program. Additionally, the Authority launched the Destination Certification Program which provides a firm basis for action on sustainable management. The Objective is to obtain the “Sustainable Tourism Destination” certificate for Ras Al Khaimah in 2023, which is internationally recognized.

Driving further growth for 2022 and beyond

With the ambition to further drive visitor numbers for the duration of 2022, the Authority has recently announced a series of strategic partnerships with airlines and leading tour operators to target emerging and growing source markets. This includes the introduction of new direct flight routes, with the Emirate set to welcome several new weekly flights from major cities in Germany, including Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich. To further boost connectivity, the Authority is developing the Emirate’s burgeoning cruise sector, with the aim of attracting 50 cruise ship calls each season, and over 10,000 passengers within the next few years.

Additionally announced at the beginning of 2022 was the multibillion-dollar integrated resort development with Wynn Resorts. Scheduled to open in 2026, the multipurpose integrated resort marks the largest-of-its-kind foreign direct investment in Ras Al Khaimah. The resort will be home to more than 1,000 rooms, shopping, meeting and convention facilities, spa, more than 10 restaurants and lounges, extensive entertainment choices, and a gaming area, set to further boost visitor numbers in the coming years.

World-class events pipeline

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority is further focusing on promoting the Emirate as a leading sporting and MICE destination in the Gulf to boost tourism, announcing a number of strategic event partnerships secured in the first half of 2022. With a strong track record of successfully staging international sporting events, such as the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon – the world’s fastest half marathon which attracts more than 5,000 participants a year – the Emirate was recently selected by The World Minifootball Federation (WMF) to stage its biennial international football competition. A mega international football competition held every two years, the 2023 Minifootball World Cup will further attract thousands of spectators and fans from around the globe to experience the Emirates unique tourism and hospitality offering.

“Already one of the fastest growing destinations in the region, the first half of 2022 has set us off on a very strong trajectory for the year. It is great to see the strategic investments made by the Authority throughout a very challenging period yield such strong results,” concluded Phillips. “As Ras Al Khaimah continues to expand its tourism, we expect to go from strength to strength, inviting more visitors from around the world to discover our stunning nature Emirate.”

As The UAE Goes Amber, The Northernmost Emirate Of Ras Al Khaimah Offers Holidays For The New Normal

With the United Arab Emirates moving to the UK's Amber list from Sunday August 8, British travellers will finally be able to return to one of their favourite holiday destinations. The Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has been working hard to ensure it is fully prepared to meet the emerging challenges and demands of the new normal.

The city is the first in the world to receive the 'Safeguard Assurance' label from Bureau Veritas; the first to gain the World Travel and Tourism Council's Safe Travels stamp; the first to offer free return PCR tests to inbound travellers which continues to this day and is a regional leader in adventure and outdoor activities, along with sustainable tourism initiatives.

"The UK is one of our top source markets, so we are delighted that the UAE is now on its Amber list," said Raki Phillips, CEO of the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA). "Speaking to travellers from our key markets, we have gleaned insights into travel preferences in the new normal. Our guests want space, fresh air and the confidence that they are safe, as they take full advantage of Ras Al Khaimah's many great outdoor attractions from beaches to mountains; culture to adventure and much more."

Ras Al Khaimah is bucking post-pandemic tourism trends with exceptional growth and a £96-million investment in its industry. According to Phillips, the 25% drop in the Emirate's tourism figures were around three times less severe than the global average at the peak of the pandemic and in July 2021 Ras Al Khaimah set a new record for visitor numbers. The destination is now embarking on a major journey to further develop its tourism offering by investing millions in sustainable tourism projects.

These include expanding the nature and adventure sports portfolios; building environmentally-friendly mountain accommodation; the construction of an eco-golf course and a scallop farm at which guests will be encouraged to dive for their dinner.

The Emirate is offering UK families the chance to visit this summer with a special 'WANASA' summer campaign running until September. This includes discounts at 3*, 4* and 5* hotels for a stay of 3+ nights, with children under 12 going free.

Phillips has lofty goals for tourism in Ras Al Khaimah, the current Gulf Tourism Capital for 2021, as he intends to bring in over 3 million visitors a year by 2030.

In partnership with Arton Capital, a leading government advisory company, RAKTDA launched 'SelectRAK' – an attractive, seamless 'one stop shop' foreign investment programme appealing to a variety of investors from real estate to entrepreneurs and retirees.

Its aim is to accelerate affordable luxury as a key benefit, bolster the local economy and attract international talent and experience in the sector. The initiative will help build all core economic sectors, including healthcare, hospitality, education, trade, and retail, in turn, creating new jobs and supporting domestic enterprises.

Ras Al Khaimah has also been working with EarthCheck, the global environmental experts, to create destination wide sustainable practices, including carbon off-set, a decrease in energy and water consumption across all hotels and attractions, and tourist site clean-ups as well as cultural preservation, community outreach and scholarship programs for local colleges and universities.

The Emirate's goal of welcoming 3 million visitors a year by 2030 is clearly evident, not just by recent airline partnerships welcoming charter and commercial flights from Russia, Eastern Europe and Asia directly into Ras Al Khaimah, but also with plans to increase hotel room inventory by 70% over the next few years, with global brands including Movenpick, InterContinental, Anantara, Radisson and more. Two billion people live within a four-hour flight of the UAE and Ras Al Khaimah: proximity, airlift and connectivity as well as the uniqueness of the destination will continue to position the Emirate as a preferred tourism destination.

Acetaia del Cristo: Ancient Techniques of Balsamic Vinegar Making at the Service of Your Taste

Sometimes the pursuit of perfection teaches us patience. Knowing the laws of nature, we can use natural processes to create culinary masterpieces of the highest quality. Like did the ancient inhabitants of Modena, who have developed techniques to create the perfect balsamic vinegar for generations. And today, their passionate inheritors follow these traditions and spend decades to make precious products that delight gourmets all over the world. This year the renowned manufacturer Acetaia del Cristo has once again been recognized at the world level and has become the winner of Luxury Lifestyle Awards in the category of The Best Luxury Balsamic Vinegars in the World.

Acetaia del Cristo was founded in 1849, and today this company proudly bears the status of the biggest producer of traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). The story of the famous brand started when Barbieri and Bonfatti families decided to unite their experience and craftsmanship to establish acetaia – the attic where balsamic vinegar is being kept for several years. And now, it is the oldest acetaia in the region of Modena with 2000 casks exclusively used to produce Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO. The oldest and most precious barrels in the acetaia date back to 1848.
Four generations of the owners’ families have been working on the secrets of the production of PDO balsamic vinegar to bring it to perfection. One of the most striking aspects of the production process is its duration. For example, the time of ageing the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO is at least 12 years, and this is just the first step of the experience. As for the Extra-Old balsamic vinegar, the threshold of over 25 years of ageing gives the delicious taste that is definitely worth waiting for. Acetaia del Cristo offers selections from barrels over 50 years old and others very limited from over one hundred years old barrels. Every year precious numbered collections of 20-30 pieces are sold for €350 per 100ml bottle.
"We are proud and happy to be recognized by the demanding Luxury Lifestyle Awards experts. It is a great honor for us to glorify the generous land of Modena and the work of our talented ancestors and contemporaries at the world level through our premium Traditional Balsamic Vinegar," said Gilberto Barbieri and Daniele Bonfatti, owners of Acetaia del Cristo.

Acetaia del Cristo offers guided tours among the long corridors and shelves of hundreds of barrels, casks, and ancient vats in the attics of Acetaia. The unique experience of an inspired sommelier is waiting for everyone in this microcosm of real aromas.
