A prestigious line-up that reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of healthcare professionals and scientists has been unveiled by Diabetes Professional Care 2015 for its inaugural conference, with keynotes from Professor Chris Ham, CEO of The Kings Fund; Dr Jim O’Brien is the National Programme Director for Diabetes Prevention, Public Health England; Tim Kelsey, National Director for patients and Information at NHS England and Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director at NHS England.
This high-level yet highly practical CPD accredited two-day conference, running throughout Diabetes Professional Care 2015, on the 11 & 12 November 2015 at London’s Barbican, will also feature experts from NICE, NHS Diabetes, Xperio Health Ltd, Imperial College London, and Rescon Technologies.
These major players will draw on the very latest thinking, technologies and trends in the diabetes marketplace as they address the top industry concerns faced by many healthcare experts working in the UK today. Diabetes Technologies and Diagnostics
On day one, Prof. Joan Taylor, Professor of Pharmaceutics from De Montfort University Leicester will be sharing her insights into ’the development of a totally implantable artificial pancreas’ for the treatment of insulin dependent diabetes.
‘Clinically informed design of desirable prevention and care technologies’ will be discussed and analysed by Jim Dawton, Design Consultant at Dawton Consulting, and Prof. Nicholas Peters, Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College London.
Laura Cleverley, Creator of Ninjabetics, will be sharing her insights into the vital role of social media, alongside Dr Partha Kar, Clinical Director of Diabetes at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, who will be discussing whether ‘social media is a fad, a necessary evil or building blocks for better diabetic care?’
Prevention of Diabetes
Diet and exercise are two major elements in helping the control of diabetes, so appropriately Dr David Haslam, GP and ‘chair of the national obesity forum’ will be addressing ‘the role of exercise in prevention of obesity’. While, Dr Nicola Guess, Senior Diabetes Research Dietician, at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, will be looking ‘beyond glucose, at the role dairy and fish products can play in the incidence and progression of diabetes’.
World Health Organization (WHO) has said that childhood obesity is one of the most serious global public health challenges for the 21st century, so to explore this challenge and to prevent diabetes in childhood and adult obesity, will be Prof. Paul Gately, Founder of MoreLife, at Leeds Beckett University.
Building on this theme, Dr John New, Consultant specialising in Obesity at Shire Hospital, will discuss ‘Weight loss properties of novel glucose lowering agents’. In addition, Dr Clive Petry, Department of Paediatrics, University of Cambridge, will reveal the ‘Genetic Risk Factors for Gestational Diabetes’.
A closing address on ‘Multidisciplinary teams for the management of complex obesity in patients with diabetes’, will be presented by Dr Carly Hughes, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Health Policy & Practice, at University of East Anglia.
Diabetes Research
Diabetes research is a key area addressed on the second day of the conference. Simon Denegri, Chair of INVOLVE, National Institute for Health Research, and National Director for Public Participation and Engagement in Research, will open with ‘Patient and public involvement in diabetes research’. He will share insights on how engaging people with diabetes, their carers and the public, in the design andimprovement of diabetes services can change patients’ lives.
Stephen Dorrell, Former Secretary of Health and Chairman of the House of Commons Health Select Committee will be chairing an interactive debate on ‘Which single intervention will be most effective in tackling the diabetes epidemic in the UK? Your vote matters!’ As part of this Roy Lilley, Health Policy Analyst will round-up issues raised live from the floor of the show and draw conclusions.
Professor Lora Heisler, Chair in Human Nutrition, Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health will be sharing her latest research finding into ‘The role of serotonin in Type 2 Diabetes’.
Bringing the entire conference to a close will be a keynote session from Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director at NHS England; followed by a roundup of the NICE guidelines published in August, looking at ‘Key changes to diabetes and our challenges.’
