Commission adopts ambitious programme to boost the Single Market

The European Commission has adopted a programme to re-launch the Single Market. Steps taken on 27 October are part of a wider initiative to stimulate interest and spark a debate across Europe about the issues that matter to individuals and businesses alike. The Single Market Act is an ambitious programme, containing some 50 measures designed to boost consumer confidence about the benefits of the Single Market as well as stimulate growth in the European economy. Some notable items include:
Eliminating barriers to cross-border online shopping. Consumers are to shop with confidence when going on the web and get access to a greater variety of products and services.
Improving market surveillance for product safety.
Ensuring all Europeans have access to basic banking services both within their own borders and when residing in other Member States;
Initiatives that work towards more responsible and transparent lending practices.
Ensuring that simple and cost-efficient alternative dispute services are in place for consumers when they have problems with a product or service.
Over the next four months the 50 measures being proposed today will be open to a European-wide debate, which will feed into the final action programme that is to be adopted in the early spring of 2011.
